Behind every successful project is a skilled and dedicated team. At Onyx Civils, our people bring experience, determination and a practical approach to every job, working together to deliver high-quality civil engineering and groundworks safely, efficiently and reliably.
Rob
Director
Rob has been obsessed with diggers since childhood, so naturally he started a construction company with the dream of owning as many as possible. Unfortunately, now everyone else gets to drive them. With years of hands-on construction experience and an apprenticeship in plant mechanics, there isn’t much Rob can’t operate, fix or figure out. He brings the practical knowledge to Onyx, while Fiona keeps a firm grip on the business side — and questionable purchases.
Don’t mention the dozer.
Fiona
Director
Fiona has been part of Onyx from the beginning, juggling two babies, paperwork and Rob’s plans for world digger domination. With a background in construction and bookkeeping, she has helped steer Onyx from its early days into the business it is today, overseeing its financial, administrative and operational development. Despite attempting to replace herself with an office team, Onyx keeps growing and finding her more work. These days, she oversees the wider business and, importantly, Rob’s questionable decisions.
Lulu
Head of Security
Lulu the Jack Russell terrorist is our self-appointed Head of Security. Her working day consists mainly of barking at things that don’t require barking at, invading everyone’s personal space and moving from lap to lap in the name of staff welfare. Every visitor also receives an extremely thorough and completely unsolicited welcome. She’s noisy, demanding and entirely convinced the office belongs to her. She’s also very cute — which is probably the only reason she’s still employed.
Giles
Contracts Manager
Giles has known Rob and Fiona for decades, which unfortunately means he knows far too much. With years of hands-on construction experience, Giles oversees our projects, coordinates teams, keeps jobs moving and deals with the inevitable challenges along the way. He’s equally comfortable working with our workforce, clients and site managers — and despite being Contracts Manager, he’s never afraid to get stuck in himself when needed.
Ben
Estimator
Ben first came to Onyx as a self-employed bricklayer and did such a good job that we basically never let him leave. After progressing to supervisor, his suspiciously good head for numbers became obvious. So, in true Onyx fashion, we dragged him off site and trained him as our estimator. Now qualified, Ben prices jobs, prepares valuations and tackles our never-ending tenders — all while remaining considerably more chilled than the rest of us.
Anthony
Project Manager
Anthony is our newest team member, so we don’t know him well enough to write anything particularly embarrassing about him yet. Give us time. Bringing a wealth of experience to Onyx, Anthony helps keep our projects organised, moving and heading in the right direction, coordinating everything involved from start to finish. He’s already experienced at least one “what have I done?” moment, which suggests he’s settling in nicely. We’re very pleased to have him on board!
Rachel
Accounts
Rachel was one of Rob’s first bookkeepers when he was a sole trader, so when we needed a full-time bookkeeper years later, we were delighted to welcome her back. With a brilliant head for numbers, Rachel keeps the finances in order, Rob on track and spots potential problems before they become disasters. Outside work, she enjoys walking with Grace, festivals and caravan escapes. She’s also training for the 2027 London Marathon in support of Dorset Mind.
Catherine
Admin Assistant
Catherine joined Onyx to support Cat with her ever-expanding workload and quickly settled in like she’d always been here. While the rest of us operate at varying levels of stress and chaos, Catherine brings calm, positivity and absolutely no interest in joining our collective panic. Alongside work, she’s mum to two secondary-schoolers and somehow remains remarkably unflustered by everything we throw at her. She’s already become a valued member of the team.
Cat
Admin & HR
Cat joined Onyx as an administrator and somehow ended up taking on HR, looking after the office and generally keeping everyone in line. She now knows the business inside out and has become Fiona’s absolute rock. Outside work, she juggles two children, the PTA, Beavers and Larry the Dachshund — and still gives Onyx 100%. She and Fiona also agree on almost everything, which is wonderfully efficient… unless you’re Rob looking for someone to back one of your ideas.
